It tells you, on average, how long a repairable asset operates before experiencing an unexpected failure. The longer the MTBF, the more reliable your equipment is likely to be. For maintenance managers, engineers, and facility teams, MTBF is more than just a number. It helps identify problem assets, improve preventive maintenance schedules, reduce downtime, and make better repair or replacement decisions. What Is Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)? Mean Time Between Failures is the average operating time between one equipment failure and the next for a repairable asset.
